Compassionate Support for Those in Need
A safe haven for the homeless community.
A safe haven for the homeless community.
Judy's Helping Hands is a compassionate non-profit organization dedicated to supporting homeless individuals in the Greater Central Texas area and beyond, welcoming those aged 18 and older. Our Resident Transitional Home offers a safe and nurturing environment for up to one year, providing a temporary haven for women and men as they rebuild their lives. During their stay, residents receive comprehensive support, including job training, job readiness programs, employment assistance, permanent housing support, and financial counseling. At Judy's Helping Hands, we are committed to walking alongside each individual, regardless of race, as they take the courageous steps toward reclaiming their lives and building a brighter future.
Good physical health is invaluable to emotional and mental wellness. Our transitional housing program provides nutritionally balanced meals and helps residents build healthy eating habits. We connect residents with needed medical services, and our facility offers transportation to and from those appointments.
We are an open, affirming, and non-affiliated organization that seeks to cultivate spirituality in our residents' lives, regardless of the form that spirituality takes. We have residents from all walks of life, who have had such varied experiences and histories with their spirituality, that our program will only be successful if we meet clients where they are. Our home offers on-site meditation spaces for residents to reflect and recharge. Residents are exposed to different spiritual exercises and practices, including meditation, journaling, faith discussions, and prayer. Through participation in a non-denominational religions community, many of our residents discover an inner peace and strength that aids in their growth process.
Maintaining healthy social relationships is an integral part of a stable support system. With the help of community volunteers, we provide residents with opportunities to attend social events, resources to organize events themselves and chances to connect and bond with others sharing similar interest. Classes and support groups are offered to develop better boundaries, conflict resolution, and personal relationships. The relationships fostered between residents add a dimension of health and wellness because of social support through a network of women with similar life experiences.
Financial struggles can limit access to important resources and cause stress that leads to unhealthy emotional conditions. That's why we offer our residents financial literacy resources, so they can learn essential life skills. We partner with community resources to provide programs such as planning and budgeting workshops, with strategies on building credit and reducing debt. We also assist residents with opening checking and savings accounts.
The effort to cultivate emotional and mental wellness focuses on providing resources for residents to break unhealthy behavior cycles and develop coping skills for dealing with trauma and mental health issues. We connect our residents with local mental health professionals and services.
Judy's Helping Hands (JHH) is a remarkable organization with a touching history rooted in the personal journey of Ms. Judy Washington. The acquisition of the transitional home in 2023 stands as a testament to the dedication of Angelika Medearis and Dorris Jackson to carry on their mother's dream of providing support to women facing homelessness due to various challenges.
Ms. Judy's own life experiences, having been adopted and later struggling with drug addiction, shaped her commitment to helping others in similar situations. Her successful journey, from receiving support through programs like JHH to earning a degree as a Drug and Alcohol Counselor from the University of California Berkeley, showcases the transformative power of assistance and education.
Even though Ms. Judy's life was unexpectedly cut short in 2011, her daughters have taken up the mantle to continue her legacy. Through JHH, they aim to offer women the same opportunities for positive change that their mother once received.
Judy's Helping Hands is not just a transitional home; it's a living tribute to Ms. Judy's dream and a beacon of hope for women who may find themselves in challenging circumstances. The organization's commitment to treating everyone with dignity and respect, regardless of their background, reflects a deep understanding of the importance of compassion in fostering positive change.
By being a welcoming and inclusive organization, JHH emphasizes its dedication to serving all members of the community. This commitment ensures that women facing homelessness due to aging out of foster care, domestic violence, or addiction can access the support they need to rebuild their lives.
In essence, Judy's Helping Hands is more than just a transitional home; it's a testament to the enduring spirit of compassion, understanding, and the belief that everyone deserves a chance to transform their lives for the better.

Judy's Helping Hands fosters respect for each resident as an individual, and services are delivered with a spirit of love and compassion. Each resident maintains her dignity and human rights regardless of her state in life, religious affiliation, color, national origin, economic status, ancestry or personal customs.
Our clinically-supported program provides comprehensive services including life skills classes, individual therapy, group counseling and financial literacy workshops that focus on six key areas of a woman’s development:
1. Mental Health
2. Physical Health
3. Financial Health
4. Spiritual Health
5. Legal Health
6. Empowerment
Residents are required to meet monthly with a case manager to develop permanent housing plans and with financial coaches to develop a financial plan. Residents also participate in counseling sessions (individual and group), and work with counselors to create an individual development plan that identifies and addresses the issues that are barriers to their independent living.
Candidates for Judy's Helping Hands must meet the following criteria:
Once application or referral is received, applicants will be invited to participate in an interview at Judy's Helping Hands. Following the interview, an offer of admission will be extended or the referral agency will receive feedback regarding why an offer was not extended.
After an offer of admission is accepted, the resident will participate in a program orientation and will be provided bed and wardrobe assignments.

Every person deserves the fundamental right to safe and adequate housing, which is essential for preserving their physical well-being and dignity. The women we serve deserve a secure and nurturing environment where they can feel valued and loved. Our mission is made possible only through the generous donations of our community members. Without this support, we wouldn't be able to offer the vital services our residents need. It costs approximately $750 per month to provide shelter and care for each woman at our facility. Your contributions can make a profound difference in their lives.
We love our community and donors, so feel free to reach out to us during normal business hours.
